Where to stay when gorilla tracking in Odzala Kokoua
Odzala Kokoua National Park is one of the last great wildernesses in Africa. Deep tropical rainforest, swamp-forest, riverine mosaics, savanna, and most importantly, significant populations of western lowland gorillas, make it a true bucket-list destination. Accommodation here isn’t about luxury versus budget, it’s about total immersion. The few camps are limited, remote, and designed to minimize impact on the forest and its wildlife.
Where you stay determines which ecosystems you explore, the wildlife you see, and the comfort of your nights. Odzala has far fewer options than the montane gorilla regions of East Africa. Still, these camps offer a remarkable, intimate experience of the Congo Basin.

What are the best lodges in Odzala Kokoua?
Ngaga Camp : ATR Rating 9.2
Ngaga Camp is the heart of gorilla trekking in Odzala. This is where all gorilla treks start and end. It is at Ngaga camp that the habituation programme has been established and it is here that the permits are issued. Visitors staying at alternative camps are required to visit Ngaga to start their gorilla treks,
Ngaga is set within a remote forest concession, it offers six elevated treehouse-style chalets perched in the canopy. Each chalet has an en-suite bathroom, veranda, mosquito netting, and running water. Communal spaces include a lounge, raised dining deck, and a fire-deck for nighttime stargazing.
Ngaga provides direct access to habituated lowland gorilla groups, including Jupiter and Neptuno. Guided treks depart from here, ensuring that guests can spend quality time observing gorillas in a primary rainforest environment.
This is a great camp for travellers prioritising gorilla tracking and full immersion in the primary rainforest.
Lango Camp : ATR Rating 9.0
Lango Camp overlooks a baï, a type of swamp-forest clearing where animals congregate. The six raised bungalows provide en-suite facilities, thatched roofs, and wrap-around decks.
Activities focus on wildlife and ecosystem immersion rather than just gorilla tracking. By this, we mean walking through wetlands, river trips by canoe, observing forest elephants, buffalo, antelopes, and a rich array of birds from elevated decks. Lango is ideal for guests looking to explore the Congo Basin’s wetland and riverine habitats. Most gorilla treks take place from Ngaga Camp, which can be reached from Lango
Mboko Camp : ATR Rating 8.8
Mboko Camp sits where forest, river, and savanna intersect, offering a unique mix of habitats. Accommodation consists of canvas or wooden-sided bungalows with verandas and en-suite bathrooms. Communal spaces include a lounge and dining pavilion with elevated decks for wildlife observation.
From Mboko, guests can access rivers, forest trails, and savanna tracks. Wildlife includes forest elephants, buffalo, antelope, primates, and diverse bird species. Mboko also serves as a key logistics hub for charter flights and transfers to other camps.
Chosing the right lodge in Odzala Kokoua
Your choice of camp in Odzala really depends on the type of experience you want. If you are here purely for the gorillas, then head to Ngaga Camp. If you are looking to add to your experience with visits to the wetlands, rivers, and baïs, then choose Lango Camp and if it’s a mix of savanna, forest, and rivers, then Mboko is for you.
Ideally, you would look at combining all three camps over several days for the experience encompassing gorilla trekking, wetland and river ecosystems and savanna-forest mosaics.
