the legendary but elusive Jade Sea

Lake Turkana, sometimes referred to as The Jade Sea, is an extremely remote and truly wild area of Northern Kenya, lying around 450 km northwest of Mount Kenya and running up to the border with Ethiopia.

The western side of the lake is accessed via the frontier settlement of Lodwar, a busy trading post for the local Turkana people. Attractions in this area include the ribbon of fertile land along the Turkwel River, the Eliye Springs down by Lake Turkana and the active volcano that forms Central Island National Park.

The eastern side of the lake is accessed via the remote settlement of South Horr. Highlights in the area include some remarkable volcanic scenery, some very interesting cultural interaction with the local fishing tribes and the famous palaeontological sites of the very remote Sibiloi National Park.

We love the remote wilderness areas of this part of the world, the scenery really is quite remarkable in parts.

However it is very difficult for us to arrange trips here due to the very significant political instability in the region and the near constant threat of Somali bandits.

The only way that we presently access the area is by light aircraft out of Sarara Camp in the Mathew’s Range further to the south, who’s experienced owners, the Bastard family, are always aware of the current situation and can make and change plans accordingly. Such flying expeditions can last anything from a few hours to several days, depending on how much of this remote region you want to explore.
