Travel to Guwahati
Guwahati
is the gateway to Kaziranga
and the Brahmaputra River
a fast-growing metropolis
The city of Guwahati is located in the remote state of Assam, 700 km northeast of Kolkata.
Sometimes referred to as ‘The Gateway to North East India’, this fast-growing metropolis is certainly enjoying something of a renaissance after decades of political insurgency.
Set on the southern bank of the important Brahmaputra River, the city has important trade links throughout the Assam region and up into eastern Bhutan.
Map
In all honesty, there isn’t a great deal in Guwahati for the international visitor, who tend to use it as a staging post on the way northeast towards Kaziranga National Park and other parts of rural Assam.
The airport is surprisingly well served, with regular connections from many locations around the country, including Kolkata, Delhi, Jaipur and Mumbai.
We generally try to avoid spending nights here in Guwahati, but when an overnight is needed in order to make connections, there are some serviceable hotels.
Perhaps more importantly, Guwahati is the starting point for high quality live-aboard cruises that head up the Brahmaputra River, which are included in the following listing.
