modest but interesting wildlife sightings

Situated at the northeastern mouth of the Abyssinian Rift Valley, Aledeghi Wildlife Reserve extends over 1800 square kilometres of open savanna grasslands, acacia woodland and mountains.

Wildlife is not prolific in this arid area, but does include cheetahs, Beisa oryx, Soemmerring gazelles, spotted hyenas, striped hyenas, northern gerenuks, bat-eared foxes and Grevy’s zebras. Lion sightings are occasional, leopards more frequent.

Notable bird species include Somali ostriches, Arabian bustards, north carmine bee-eaters, Abyssinian rollers and scissor-tailed kites.

The cultural interaction with the local Afar people is amongst the best in Ethiopia, some of our top guides rate it higher than that in the Southern Omo Valley, which is really saying something. There’s some very nice little villages that can easily be visited.

This area is usually visited as part of a private-guided overland safari, starting in Addis Ababa and exploring the southern parts of the country, including any or all of Awash, Aledeghi, Harar, the Bale Mountains and the Southern Omo Valley, over the course of one or two weeks.

Where to stay

High quality safari accommodation is available at Aledeghi Expedition Camp, a mobile operation which is set up for the exclusive use of up to eight guests.
