seasonal access to the remote wetlands of the Urema floodplain

Chicari Camp is located in the heart of Gorongosa National Park in central Mozambique, overlooking the wildlife-rich Chicari Pan and in close proximity to the Urema floodplain.

The camp is arranged around a central canvas open-air lounge and dining area on low decking, with wide views across the pan and plenty of shaded seating. A firepit sits out in front of the camp, close to the pan.

One of the unique aspects of Chicari Camp is how much wildlife the pan brings to the camp. Elephants, waterbuck, bushbuck, and warthogs are regular visitors, often visible from your tent’s veranda. Birdlife is especially rich here, even more so during the wetter months, when the pan is transformed into a lush wetland with lilies and flocks of wading birds.

Rooms

Guest accommodation is in ten canvas tents, eight standard safari tents and two elevated treehide tents, spaced out around the pan for uninterrupted views. The tents are raised slightly on wooden decks and accessed via wooden walkways. Each features a simple, comfortable bedroom with twin or double beds, mosquito netting, solar lighting, and a standing fan. En-suite bathrooms use hot-water bucket showers and flush toilets.

The two treehide tents are located beneath an elevated viewing platform and are ideal for families or small groups wanting a more secluded stay. Each tent also has a shaded outdoor seating area.

Activities

Chicari Camp offers the following guided activities:

  • Vehicle safari
  • Walking safari
  • Seasonal boat safari (March–May, depending on water levels)
  • Birdwatching
  • Community and conservation visits
  • Pangolin centre visits
  • Mt. Gorongosa and coffee project excursions (on request)
