a delightfully authentic safari experience

Nomad Mbalageti Camp is located in the Serengeti West area of northern Tanzania.

This property is owned and operated by Nomad Tanzania, one of the leading safari companies in East Africa, the owners of which are committed to both an earthy, authentic, high quality approach to safari and a very strong conservation ethos.

This was actually the pioneering mobile camp here in the Serengeti, the first to follow the migration around the park, stopping in four or five different locations for a few weeks or months. The idea was first formulated by Mark and Milly Houldsworth around 1992 and has been much imitated since. There are now dozens of camps migrating around in this way.

The camp itself is centred on a pair of simple mess tents, containing modest lounge and dining areas, leading out to a campfire.

Rooms

Guest accommodation at Nomad Mbalageti Camp is in a total of seven large tents, each with an indoor bathroom …

  • Tent : x6
  • Family Tent : x1 : with two bedrooms

Animals in camp

One aspect we always appreciate is the amount of wildlife that can come into camp. Here you can expect to see wildlife around most of the day, whilst at night animals often pass right between the tents, including lions and elephants, which can be rather exciting.

Activities

Nomad Mbalageti Camp provides the following guided activities, not all of which are usually included in the price …

  • Vehicle safari
  • Bush meals
  • Day trips to Lake Victoria
  • Cultural interaction

Serengeti West tends to feature in a relatively low proportion of trips, mainly due to the fact that the migration window here is quite slim and the attractions of the area at other times are limited.

The usual stay duration is 2-3 nights.

Seasonality

This Serengeti West area tends to be of most interest during the Apr-Jun period, when the migration herds tend to pass through. The weather conditions in April are typically pretty difficult, it is the rainiest month of the year. But through May the situation usually improves significantly and by June the dry season should be well underway.

The other period of modest interest in Serengeti West is the Jul-Oct dry season, when the weather should be very reliable and the resident wildlife should be relatively accessible.

Getting around

The majority of people visiting Serengeti West do so as part of a guided overland safari, so they travel to their camp and around the area in their private vehicle.

A very few people visit Serengeti West in isolation, flying in and out of the airstrip here. In this case they travel around the reserve with a vehicle and guide from their camp.
