polished service and high quality guiding

Set around 15 km northwest of the Iguazú Falls in northeast Argentina, Awasi Iguazú is a very intimate, discreet and polished property.

Although only lying 2km to the east of the town of Puerto Iguazú, this little place is so tucked away in the dense tropical jungle that it feels a good deal more remote.

It’s centred on a pleasantly modest main building of timber, under a tin roof. But as soon as you step inside you can sense the quality.

With a maximum of 30 guests at the lodge, these public spaces can afford to be intimate, providing the place with the atmosphere of a cosy home rather than an hotel.

The property is a member of the Relais & Chateaux portfolio.

Rooms

Guest accommodation at Awasi Iguazú is in 14 suite rooms, each of which has air-conditioning, a separate lounge area, a large deck, outside shower and a private plunge pool.

The rooms come in 2 different specifications …

  • Standard Villas : x13 : 100 sqm / 1075 sqft
  • Master Villa : x1 : 180 sqm / 1950 sqft : 2 two bedrooms and 2 bathrooms

Activities

Awasi Iguazú provides access to a wide range of activities, including various ways to explore the Iguazu Falls and the surrounding jungle, plus various options for cultural interactions.

Awasi Iguazú offers private guides and vehicles to every group of guests, in order to upgrade the experience in what can be a rather touristy area.

Awasi Iguazu is usually used as a single stop in the falls area, usually for three nights.

However, if you are combining Argentina with Brazil, you may like to add a night at the Belmond hotel on the northern side, which provides access to the falls in the evenings, which can be magical.

Seasonality

The best time to visit the Iguazú Falls is generally considered to be during the two shoulder seasons of Apr-Jun and Oct-Dec. In truth, there is no perfect time and no terrible time to visit, there is always a compromise to be made between weather conditions, water flow rates and visitor numbers.

Getting there

The Iguazú area is served by two airports …

On the Argentina side there is the Cataratas del Iguazú Airport (IGR), which has connections to Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Salta. For other locations in Argentina (Mendoza, Bariloche, Los Glaciares, Ushuaia and Peninsula Valdes) it’s usually necessary to fly via the capital.

From the airport it’s a road transfer of around 15 minutes to Gran Meliá Iguazú and around 40 minutes to the other hotels over by the small town of Puerto Iguazú.

On the Brazil side there is the Foz do Iguaçu Airport (IGU), which has connections to Sao Paulo and Rio. For other locations in Brazil (like Pantanal and Amazon) it’s usually necessary to fly via Sao Paulo.

From the airport it’s a road transfer of around 15 minutes to any of the lodges on this side, about an hour to the lodges across the border in Argentina.

It’s worth noting that Foz do Iguaçu Airport is so well connected internationally that it’s often used as a starting point for trips to Argentina, instead of Buenos Aires. You simply fly in here (via Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo), cross the border to Argentina and carry on from there.
