Safari to Great Zimbabwe
Great Zimbabwe
is a major archaeological site
in the south of the country
the centre of an historic gold-mining empire
Great Zimbabwe is located in the south-eastern hills of Zimbabwe, near Lake Mutirikwe and Masvingo town.
Constructed in the 1100s by the Gokomere culture who were ancestors of the modern Shona, this city is thought to have been the capital of a kingdom during the late iron age.
It was later abandoned in the 1400s and today is home to some of the oldest and largest structures in Southern Africa.
The area, which is UNESCO world heritage listed, extends over almost 800 hectares and is divided into three groups: the Hill Ruins, the Great Enclosure and the Valley Ruins.
