Safari to the Rwenzori Mountains
Rwenzori
is a mystical and elusive
range of mountains
seriously impressive high altitude trekking routes
Set in the remote west of Uganda, the Rwenzori Mountains are a place of legend, with snow-capped peaks and superb trekking routes.
Reaching an impressive 5109m, the snow-capped Rwenzori separates Uganda from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This has long been a place of legend, being cited by Ptolemy in 150AD as the source of the Nile. Long known as the ‘Mountains of the Moon’, the peaks were first explored by Europeans only as late as 1906.
The mountains are renowned for their super-sized vegetation, with unique varieties of giant groundsel and lobelia, as well as a six metre heather.
Climate zones range from tropical rainforest, through alpine moorland to alpine desert and distant snowfields.
The peaks provide some excellent technical slopes for mountaineers, plus a wonderful week-long non-technical trekking circuit around the high tarns.
