Safari to Mount Elgon West
Mount Elgon West
is an impressive extinct volcano
that straddles Uganda and Kenya

a fabulous but very rarely-undertaken trek
Mount Elgon is the eighth highest peak in Africa, the remnant of what was once the greatest volcano in East Africa.
The summit contains a stunning and remote caldera, 8 km in diameter, the undulating floor of which is dotted with forests and lakes. But the mountain is rarely trekked, lacking a broad appeal and with intermittent security issues.
The main point of interest is the modest Sipi Falls, on the lower western slopes of the mountain, where there are some pleasant simple lodges.
Further down, the substantial town of Mbale is an agricultural centre of little general interest to most travellers.

The Mount Elgon area is usually accessed by road. It lies to the north of the main road between Kampala and the lakeside town of Kisumu, across the border in Kenya.
Our guests very rarely travel this busy main road, so we hardly ever end up including the area in trips.
