the city contains some impressive Muslim architecture

Set on the Mediterranean coastline, 180 km northwest of Cairo, Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt, a major cultural and commercial centre.

The city was founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great and has been constantly remodelled by different conquerors.

This ancient city was home to a famous pharos (lighthouse) and a legendary library, neither of which have survived.

Below the modern city are the remains of the Greek and Roman periods.

The fortified waterfront, parts of which date back to mediaeval times, is relatively attractive.

But the most part of this sprawling city is largely charmless, with the majority of its once-grand historical buildings now sadly crumbling and neglected.

There remains some prominent historic Muslim architecture, notably the Montaza Palace, which was built in 1892.

Alexandria is very rarely included in trips, the city offers too little of interest to compete with all the wonderful places in Egypt.

Guests who do want to include Alexandria most commonly visit as a long day trip or overnight by road from Giza.
