Where to stay when gorilla tracking in Bwindi Forest
Bwindi lodges fall broadly into northern (Buhoma) and southern (Nkuringo / Rushaga) sectors. The north is more accessible and busier, with several lodges clustered near the main trailheads. The south is quieter and more remote, offering fewer lodges but intimate forest experiences. Across both regions, the lodges vary from ultra-luxury bandas with spas to simple, budget-friendly cottages, all providing access to the gorilla permits managed by the national park.
The Buhoma area, on the forest’s northwestern side is home to the main town and park headquarters. The best lodges in this area are Mahogany Springs, Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge and Buhoma Lodge. There are also excellent options in the slightly quieter, more scenic Nkuringo area on the southwestern side. Here, the standout lodge is the reasonably upmarket Clouds Gorilla Lodge, with Nkuringo Gorilla Camp providing a simpler, slightly lower-cost alternative.
The other two main areas, Ruhija and Rushaga, both have limited decent-quality accommodation options, so we recommend basing yourself in Buhoma or Nkuringo and visiting the other sectors from there. Arguably, the very best way to experience Bwindi Forest is to stay at a lodge in both the Buhoma and Nkuringo areas, visiting a gorilla family on each side and connecting the two areas by hiking through the forest, usually over 4–8 nights.
