Where is the best place for gorilla tracking in Bwindi Forest

Where to go gorilla tracking in Bwindi Forest?

Where you trek in Bwindi shapes every part of the experience, from the terrain underfoot to the gorilla families you may encounter, the pace of the walk, and the overall feel of the forest.

Nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas live in Bwindi, spread across a mosaic of valleys, ridges and dense forest corridors. Gorilla tracking takes place in four main sectors of the park Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo each with its own trailheads, landscapes and hikes. While permits are issued centrally by the park authority, treks are conducted from these specific sectors, and they are not interchangeable. Choosing the right area can shape everything from how demanding the hike feels to the atmosphere of your encounter, transforming your experience from simply memorable to truly exceptional.

Buhoma sector : the classic Bwindi experience

The Buhoma sector, on the northwestern edge of Bwindi, is the historical heart of gorilla tracking in the forest. This was where the first gorilla families were habituated for tourism, and it remains the most established and accessible area.

Buhoma offers access to multiple well-habituated gorilla families, making it a strong choice for first-time trackers or those with limited time. The trail network here is well developed, with experienced guides and trackers who know the forest intimately. Treks in Buhoma tend to be varied rather than extreme, combining river crossings, forest paths and moderate climbs through thick vegetation.

The gorilla families in this sector are accustomed to regular monitoring and visits, which often results in calm, extended encounters once the group is found. While no trek can ever be guaranteed to be easy, Buhoma generally offers a more predictable experience in terms of logistics and pacing.

Buhoma is also where Bwindi’s conservation story began, and Bwindi gorilla tracking here carries a strong sense of legacy. Visitors are walking the same forest paths that shaped the global model for mountain gorilla tourism, research and protection.

Nkuringo sector : remote, dramatic and deeply immersive

Nkuringo lies in the southwestern corner of Bwindi and feels markedly different from Buhoma. This sector is higher, steeper and more rugged, with sweeping views across forested ridges and into neighbouring Rwanda and the Virunga volcanoes.

Gorilla tracking in Nkuringo is often more physically demanding, with steeper ascents and descents and longer hikes through less disturbed forest. For many travellers, this is precisely the appeal. The landscape feels wilder and quieter, and encounters can feel particularly intimate due to lower visitor numbers.

The gorilla families here tend to range across more dramatic terrain, which can mean longer treks, but also richer forest immersion. Time is spent deep in the forest, often with fewer signs of human activity beyond the trackers themselves. For experienced trekkers or travellers seeking a stronger sense of adventure, Nkuringo offers one of the most rewarding gorilla tracking experiences in Africa.

Nkuringo also highlights the resilience of Bwindi’s gorillas, thriving in a landscape shaped by altitude, weather and dense vegetation. Treks here feel less scripted and more exploratory, reinforcing the sense that you are entering the gorillas’ world rather than the other way around.

Ruhija sector : central Bwindi and high-altitude forest

Ruhija sits in the eastern-central part of Bwindi and is the least visited of the main tracking sectors. Perched at a higher elevation, this area is cooler and often mist-laden, with a distinct montane forest atmosphere.

The terrain in Ruhija is undulating rather than steep, but altitude plays a role in how demanding the trek feels. The forest here is quieter, and the trekking experience often feels more contemplative, with long stretches of walking through bird-rich forest before encountering gorillas.

Gorilla families in Ruhija are well habituated but less frequently visited than those in Buhoma, offering a sense of exclusivity without the intensity of Nkuringo’s climbs. This sector is particularly appealing to travellers interested in a slower, less crowded experience and those combining gorilla tracking with birding or extended forest exploration.

Ruhija demonstrates the ecological diversity of Bwindi, showing how gorillas adapt to different elevations and forest structures within a relatively small geographic area.

Rushaga sector : flexibility and permit availability

Rushaga, also in the south, is known for having the highest number of habituated gorilla families. This makes it one of the most flexible sectors in terms of permit availability, particularly during peak seasons when other areas sell out quickly.

The terrain in Rushaga varies considerably, from gentler forest paths to steep hillsides, depending on where the gorilla family is ranging on the day of your trek. Because of the number of families, treks can sometimes be shorter, but this is never guaranteed.

Rushaga is also one of the sectors offering gorilla habituation experiences, where visitors spend extended time with a family still becoming accustomed to human presence.

For travellers prioritising flexibility or looking to maximise their chances of securing permits, Rushaga is a practical and often overlooked choice.

Choosing the right sector for your Bwindi gorilla tracking experience

There is no single “best” place to go gorilla tracking in Bwindi. Instead, the right sector depends on what you value most.

Buhoma suits travellers seeking a classic, well-established introduction to gorilla tracking with balanced terrain and strong conservation heritage. Nkuringo appeals to those who want remoteness, challenge and dramatic scenery. Ruhija offers altitude, quiet forest immersion and fewer visitors, while Rushaga provides flexibility, density of gorilla families and access to extended habituation experiences.

We often recommend combining sectors rather than viewing Bwindi as a single experience. Tracking gorillas in more than one part of the forest reveals how varied this ecosystem truly is, and how adaptable these incredible creatures are to different landscapes.
