Safari to Antarctica Central
Antarctica Central
is the section of the continent
accessed from South Africa
the most exclusive Antarctic experiences
Antarctica Central includes all the parts of the continent that lie inland and which are typically reached by plane and explored on the ground, rather than by ship.
Trips to these areas are typically rather cool and exclusive, but are also very expensive, typically falling into the range USD 5,000-15,000 per person per night.
The area contains a handful of extremely remote camps, offering a range of cool activities, including flying day trips to various penguin colonies and down to the South Pole.
Map
Set around 3900 km south of Africa, Queen Maud Land is a large segment of Antarctica that remains relatively unexplored. The area is almost always visited by air out of Cape Town, with one prominent company operating exclusive safaris out of three small luxury camps, including visits to the South Pole.
fabulous but famously expensive camps
The Weddell Sea is a huge and usually-frozen inlet that cuts into the body of Antarctica. Despite being adjacent to the popular Antarctic Peninsula, this area is rarely visited, with one specialist company operating safaris around a collection of three inland camps.
a massive rarely-visited ice pack
The heart of Antarctica is covered by an endless ice sheet, punctuated by occasional mountain ranges. The main reason to visit is to reach the pole itself. Most people fly in from locations around the coast, but it is possible to join epic treks and actually drag a sled all the way to the pole.
