North 8 is an eight night trek on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Day 1 : Lemosho Trailhead (2150m) to Lemosho Forest Camp (2650m).
After a picnic lunch, it is a short 2-3 hour walk through beautiful forest to the first campsite.
Day 2 : Lemosho Forest Camp (2650m) to Shira One Camp (3550m).
The route quickly leaves the forest, with a long 6-7 hours hike to join the main trail at Shira One Bivouac ...
... where you can continue to get to grips with the camp routine.
Day 3 : Shira One Bivouac (3550m) to Shira Hut Bivouac (3850m).
The third day contains 4-5 hours of walking ...
... which can be extended to 7-8 hours by detouring via the scenic Shira Cathedral ...
... by which time your team has moved the camp up to Shira Hut Bivouac.
Day 4 : Shira Hut Bivouac (3850m) to Moir Hut Bivouac (4200m).
Today we veer off the main Shira Trail and head 4-5 hours to the remote Moir Hut.
Day 5 : Moir Hut Camp (4200m) to Buffalo Bivouac (4150m).
Today's 4-7 hour trek traverses the little-visited northern part of the mountain ...
... to arrive at Buffalo Bivouac, from where there are often awesome views down to Amboseli in Kenya.
Day 6 : Buffalo Bivouac (4200m) to Third Cave (3900m).
A 5-7 hour hike leads around the northeast shoulder of the mountain, again on a very rarely used trail.
Day 7 : Third Cave (3900m) to Kibo Camp (4700m).
It usually takes 3-4 hours to reach Kibo Hut ...
... from where the summit attempt will be made in the morning.
After lunch you can try get some rest ...
... and spend some time using your Altox, to keep yourself clear of headaches and other symptoms ...
... before bedding down for a very early night.
Day 8 : Kibo Camp (4700m) to Uhuru (5896m) to Horombo Hut (3720m).
The 5-6 hour slow grind up to the crater rim is the toughest part of the trek ...
... aiming to arrive at Gillman's Point in time for sunrise at 0600hrs.
From there it's a further hour around the crater rim to Uhuru Summit.
Uhuru Summit is the highest part of the crater rim shown here to the left.
... after which we descend back to Barafu Bivouac for lunch and a break.
After lunch we descend a further 3-4 hours to Millennium Bivouac.
Day 9 : Millennium Camp (3720m) to Mweka Trailfoot (1650m).
The day starts with the tipping ceremony, which always ends up with a big song and dance ...
... followed by the 5-6 hour walk down to Mweka Gate and the awaiting vehicles.
