Nairobi
The capital of Kenya, Nairobi is a major city and the primary transport hub for East Africa. It's a typically hectic place, but with some pleasant quiet suburbs, a good range of hotels and some interesting activities, notably the famous giraffe and baby elephant sanctuaries.
Day 1

Giraffe Manor
Giraffe Manor is located in the Langata area to the southwest of Nairobi.
The house is centred on an original 1930's manor house.
Guest accommodation is in twelve rooms of various descriptions.
Activities include visits to the world famous David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and modest vehicle safari inside the national park.
A real highlight is a visit to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
Some modest vehicle safari is possible inside Nairobi National Park.
Mara Confluence
Set 200 km west of Nairobi, Mara Confluence is the sector of the Maasai Mara which is best known for migration river crossings Jul-Oct and has a very wide range of lodge options. But some serious traffic issues.

The primary activity is vehicle safari during daylight hours.
Balloon safari is an excellent but pricey extra.
Stonetown
Set on the west coast of Zanzibar Island, Stone Town is a fabulously historic and chaotic place, with guest accommodation in a wide range of characterful hotels, offering a wide range of largely cultural and historical activities.

The Old Portuguese Fort still sits in the middle of town.
Behind lies a bewildering maze of alleyways.
Stonetown used to be the centre of the slave trade on the East Coast.
Kilwa
Set on the mainland coast of Tanzania, 250 km south of Dar es Salaam, Kilwa is a little-visited area with some extremely important and picturesque Swahili ruins. Offshore, there is one fabulously remote private island lodge.

Fanjove Island Lodge is located in the Kilwa area.
The lodge is centred on an open-sided main building, with a separate dining area in the nearby lighthouse.
Guest accommodation is in just ten thatched villas.
Activities include swimming, snorkelling, diving, sailing, walking and cultural visits.
Sailing trips are undertaken in a dhow.
The snorkelling is really easy, walking straight in off the beach.
There is some superb diving beyond the fringing reef, whilst the lagoon is perfect for learners.
