Kasanka
Kasanka
is famous for its
enormous bat migrations
a scenic landscape of wetlands, woodlands, and rivers
Kasanka is a fascinating and remote wilderness that now contains the reliable Wasa Lodge.
Activities include vehicle safari, walking safari and mokoro canoe safari.
Kasanka National Park is famous for its enormous bat migration, the largest mammal migration in the world. Each year, up to ten million straw-coloured fruit bats converge to feed on the region’s seasonal fruiting trees, creating a spectacular natural display at dusk and dawn.
Map
Oct-Dec is the bat migration season, but there are good reasons to visit in other months, such as the Jun-Oct dry season.
Getting there
Kasanka is inconveniently located to combine with the more popular safari locations in Zambia.
The area can be reached by road from Lusaka in around ten hours.
It is also possible to charter a light aircraft from the South Luangwa area, that lies to the east.
If you enjoy a proper road trip, then it is possible to drive from South Luangwa to North Luangwa, then take the back tracks over to the main road, break the journey with a night or two at Shiwa Ngandu, continue to Kasanka, then drive back into Lusaka.
